How do you water a dendrobium orchid? Nanny level tutorial, watch it and take 3 years less!
Dendrobium orchids can be said to be very well-kept orchids, but many hobbyists have problems with watering.
As a 10-year horticulturist, today I start from 4 major growth stages, 5 mainstream planting methods, with practical experience to tell you: Dendrobium orchid watering is never ‘three days once’ so simple!
First, the growth stage watering method: listen to understand the ‘drinking code’ of the Dendrobium orchid.

1.Budding period (February-April)
The golden rule of ‘sip and drink’ is when the new buds are soybean-sized, use the combination of ‘spray + drip irrigation’.
Plate planting/bark planting: Spray the roots and leaves with a fine mist from a spray can early in the morning, both in the morning and in the evening.
Pot planting/moss icon planting: keep the outer 1cm of the substrate slightly dry, the inner moist but not waterlogged, insert a bamboo stick for 5 minutes and then pull it out to observe the humidity (it is recommended to water the pots twice a week, and soak the pots for 20 minutes each time)
2.Vigorous growing period (April-September)
‘Dendrobium icon enters into the mode of ’drinking water mania” at this time.
Sunny day management: board plant every morning and evening, spray water 1 time (midday to avoid direct spray), potted plants every 4-6 days watering, according to the different substrate materials to grasp the flexibility (outflow of water up to the bottom hole of the pot 3 times).
Rainy season countermeasures: air humidity > 80% stop watering the roots, switch to potassium phosphate icon 2000 times liquid spray foliage back (2 times a week to enhance disease resistance)

3.Bud-breeding period (November-January next year)
‘Water control to promote flowers’ key period of bud differentiation stage to play the ‘heartbeat game’.
2 weeks before bud icon: cut off water for 3 days → water thoroughly → cut off water for another 3 days (cycle of 3 times to stimulate flower buds).
After the flower arrows are drawn out, switch to 25℃ warm water once a week, add 1 drop of white vinegar icon to the water (to adjust the pH value to 6.2 is the best), and the complexity of the operation can be ignored without effect.

4.Dormant period (December-January)
‘Hibernation mode’ life preservation guide Dendrobium orchids’ dormant and bud-bearing period is almost duplicated from time to time.
The climate is characterised by a low-temperature phase, and watering during the low-temperature period should be ‘three looks’: look at the temperature, water twice a month when it’s >15℃, and stop watering completely when it’s <8℃.
Look at the substrate: bark planting crushed without moisture, moss planting becomes light brown when watered.
Look at the weather: choose continuous sunny days at 10 am watering, water temperature needs to be higher than the ambient temperature by 3 ℃ is appropriate.
Life-saving tips: Frostbitten plants stop watering immediately!
Use a brush to clean the rotting root system, apply carbendazim icon and then switch to planting with crushed charcoal mixed with orchid stone.

Second, the planting method of watering tips: choose the right method to save 50%!
1.Board planting (snakewood board/tree fern icon board)
Watering cycle: 1 time per day in summer, 1 time per week in winter
Original method: 45 ° angle diagonal spray water flow, so that the water follows the natural flow of the board (to avoid direct impact on the shoots)
Upgraded programme: Tie up strips of moss as a ‘water storage belt’ to extend the moisturising time by 3-5 hours.
2.Potted plants (pine scale/coconut shell substrate)
Golden Ratio: >70% of the substrate particles, when watering, first water 3 times around the edge of the pot, and then pour in the centre, or you can water as you like.
3.Moss planting Watering signals: the surface layer of moss becomes shallow, pinch out the water droplets, water when it is almost dry.
Fatal Mistake: Blackened water moss must be replaced immediately! Rotting material can cause the entire plant to die.

4.Ground planting (southern courtyard)
Terrain Selection: Slope > Flat land, East-West planting > North-South – Rainy Season Pre-planning: Spread 5cm thick volcanic stone icon drainage layer around the root system, and sprinkle grass ash to prevent rotting of the roots after heavy rain.
All the orchid friends need to flexibly grasp the watering method according to their actual planting environment. The above is just some planting experience of the flower grower myself, based on what I have experienced and seen, only for the reference of orchid friends.
