Dendrobium denneanum Kerr, commonly known as Purple-spotted Golden Orchid, is a genus of dendrobium in the family Orchidaceae.

It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and Appendix II by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Dendrobium denneanum Kerr is noticeably stouter, with stems over 4 mm thick, leaves 1.8-4.5 cm wide, inflorescences 5-14 cm long, bract segments 1.8-3 cm long, and the labellum masked with a large purple patch.

Born on tree trunks in sparse forests in mountainous areas at 600-2500 m above sea level.

Distributed in India, Nepal, Myanmar, etc. China from Hainan, SW to NW Guangxi, and S Guizhou.

It has the effects of anti-tumour, lowering blood pressure and enhancing immunity. Extremely ornamental, one of the main flowers for garden ornamental.

Morphological characteristics

Distinguished from the original variety (Dendrobium linearis) by a distinctly stouter plant with stems more than 4 mm thick, leaves 1.8-4.5 cm wide, inflorescences 5-14 cm long, bracteoles 1.8-3 cm long, and a large purple patch on the labellum.

Produced in Hainan (Damwangling), southwestern to northwestern Guangxi (Lingyun, Leye, Fengshan, Jingxi, Debao, Napo), southern to southwestern Guizhou (Xingyi, Luodian, Pingtang, Anlong, Guanling, Huishui), and southeastern to northwestern Yunnan (Pingbian, Yanshan, Jianshui, Menghai, Fengqing, Canyuan, Lancang, Gengma, Zhenkang, Tengchong, Gongshan, Lijiang, Vichy, Deqin, etc.). Born on tree trunks in open forests in mountainous areas at 600–2500 m above sea level.

It occurs in India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The type was obtained from Laos.

Varieties in brief

Dendrobium denneanum Kerr is a variety of Dendrobium linearis.

Dendrobium linearis has the slenderest stems among the large-flowered species of the genus Dendrobium. It grows in Taiwan, south-central Sichuan, southeastern and northwestern Yunnan, and is also more widely distributed in Myanmar and India.

The stem of Dendrobium linearis is 2-4 mm thick, the leaf width is 0.4-1.4 cm, the flower is orange, and the labellum does not have any plaque.

In addition to the above varieties, there are also two-spotted stacked-sheath Dendrobium, produced in southern to central Sichuan, with a lavender halo on the upper part of the sepals and two purple patches.
